TERMS OF USE

Terms of use

Plain ground rules for using Brainshelves.

LAST UPDATED 14 OCTOBER 2026
DRAFTThis text is a draft written in plain language. It has not yet been reviewed by the service’s owner or by a lawyer, and it is not legal advice.

Using Brainshelves

By creating an account or using Brainshelves (the app and the website, which is currently still labelled “Marginalia”) you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use it. You must be at least 13 years old.

What it is

Brainshelves helps you keep and reflect on what you read and watch. You speak, an AI turns your words into notes, and you decide what to keep. It is a personal tool, not professional, medical, legal or financial advice.

AI output can be wrong

Summaries, notes and journal prompts are produced by an AI and may be inaccurate, incomplete or unsuitable. You are responsible for checking what you keep. If you see something inaccurate, offensive or unsafe, please use the Report option in the app.

Your account

  • Keep your sign-in details private; you are responsible for activity on your account.
  • Give accurate information and use one account per person.
  • You can delete your account at any time from the delete account page.

Your content

What you record, write and save is yours. You give us permission to store and process it, including by sending it to the AI and hosting providers named in the privacy policy, only so we can run the service for you. Please record only yourself, or people who have agreed to be recorded.

Book details and covers come from Google Books and belong to their owners. Links, titles and thumbnails of web pages and videos belong to their creators; we keep only public details, never the full text or transcript.

Please don’t

  • use Brainshelves to break the law or harm, harass or deceive anyone;
  • try to break, overload or get around the service, including its limits and its AI;
  • use it to produce abusive, hateful or dangerous content;
  • access anyone else’s account or data.

We may suspend or close accounts that do, and may limit how much any one account can use so the service stays fair for everyone.

The service itself

Brainshelves is provided free of charge for now, “as is” and without promises of uninterrupted or error-free service. We may change it, add paid features later, or stop it; if we plan to stop it we will try to give you notice and a chance to export your notes.

Limits of our responsibility

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data or notes; please export anything you cannot afford to lose. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have by law that cannot be limited.

Changes and contact

We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and continuing to use Brainshelves after a change means you accept it. Questions: brainshelves.net@gmail.com.
